Study mode

  • Courses on Unistats are all recognised UK awards. In addition to the awarded qualification some courses may have accreditation. This means that a Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB) formally recognises the professional value of the qualification. PSRBs include the General Medical Council, the Architects Registration Board, the British Association of Art Therapists, and the Institute of Physics.

Course characteristics

Sandwich year

As part of an undergraduate degree, a sandwich year or course includes the opportunity to undertake a work placement or internship in a relevant company or organisation.

Year abroad

Some courses at some UK institutions include the opportunity for students to take a year abroad as part of their studies (for example, a student taking a language degree might study in the country where the language is spoken).

Foundation year

A foundation course is a preparatory course for students who want to specialise in a particular area. Some first degree courses will require students to take a foundation year in advance of their degree, this is particularly common in the field of art and design.

Qualification type

  • Enhanced first degree programmes typically include the equivalent of at least four years full-time study (five in Scotland), of which the equivalent of at least one year is at masters level.

  • A first degree, is the standard degree for undergraduate higher education. A typical undergraduate degree in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland involves the equivalent of three years full time study (four in Scotland).

  • A foundation degree is a qualification which combines academic study with work based learning, focussing on a particular job or profession. A foundation degree involves the equivalent of two years of full time study and allows progress onto a full first degree.

  • A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a work-related course. A full-time HND generally takes two years to complete, or three to four years part-time.

  • A Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a work-related course. A full time course generally takes one year to complete, or two years part-time.

  • Other undergraduate e.g. CertHE, DipHE
